A New Approach to Indoor Sports: Digital Hiking Experience on a Large Vertical Screen

Paintpam’s Digital Hiking experience—presented at Hanbit Tower Plaza in Daejeon—offers visitors an immersive way to enjoy Daejeon’s Dullegil trails indoors using a vertical screen kiosk, a stepper machine, and 360-degree video content. Unlike traditional, repetitive indoor fitness tools, this solution combines senior healthcare with an engaging digital sports experience, encouraging enjoyable and sustainable exercise habits. The system is highly adaptable for indoor pop-up exhibitions, wellness spaces, and public venues, with plans for further content expansion.

When Outdoor Exercise Isn’t Easy, Bring the Trail Indoors

Hot, humid weather often makes outdoor exercise uncomfortable—and for seniors, low-impact indoor fitness becomes even more essential.

Yet most indoor fitness equipment is monotonous and takes up too much space without providing much sensory engagement.

To address this, Paintpam collaborated with the Daejeon Tourism Organization to present a more enjoyable and immersive indoor sports solution for senior wellness through the Dream Dori Pop-up Exhibition at Hanbit Tower Plaza.

Digital Sports Meets Nature: Walking Daejeon’s Dullegil Indoors

The exhibition features an interactive installation combining a stepper machine and Paintpam’s vertical screen kiosk from the IF series.

The content is based on 360-degree video footage of Section 11 of Daejeon’s Dullegil trail (Gubongsan), filmed by Paintpam.

As visitors walk on the stepper, their movements are tracked in real-time, and the video responds to their pace—simulating a natural hiking experience indoors.

The immersive 13-minute walking sequence changes scenery with every step, showing inclines and downhill paths on a 120-inch vertical screen, turning a simple step workout into a multi-sensory fitness experience.

Why Vertical Kiosks? Better Immersion, Better Space Efficiency

Unlike conventional horizontal screens, the vertical display format closely mirrors the natural orientation of human sight and movement—especially for walking, hiking, or cycling content. When we walk, our focus tends to move vertically, not horizontally.

  1. This makes vertical screens better suited for immersive fitness environments, allowing users to feel more connected to the experience.

  2. Vertical kiosks are also space-efficient. Unlike horizontal displays that require wide walls, vertical setups take advantage of ceiling height and can be installed even in narrow indoor settings without compromising on screen size or impact.

Making Fitness Fun and Accessible Through Indoor Sports Experiences

Most senior fitness devices or indoor exercise equipment tend to become repetitive and boring over time. They’re also limited by space and often fail to offer stimulating or interactive elements that keep users engaged.

By contrast, digital sports experiences like this one allow people to walk, visually follow real trails, and see their body’s movements reflected on-screen—making exercise more enjoyable, less boring, and easier to maintain as a healthy habit.

This first experience using Gubongsan trail is just the beginning. We hope to expand the content to include other Dullegil sections around Daejeon—and eventually famous scenic routes from across Korea, offering a unique blend of wellness and regional storytelling in a compact digital format.
